President Bola Tinubu has ordered a comprehensive reform of Nigerian football following the resignation of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, and members of the federation’s Executive Committee.
The directive comes after a series of disappointing performances by Nigeria’s national teams, including the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Super Falcons’ failure to reach the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said the reform would address longstanding challenges in the administration and development of football in the country.
“The reform must respond to a longstanding need to strengthen governance, administration, stakeholder representation, development pathways, domestic competitions, and accountability across Nigerian football,” the President said.
Tinubu directed the National Sports Commission (NSC) to work with the NFF Secretariat and other stakeholders to ensure continuity while a broad reform process is carried out.
The process will also involve consultations with FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The NFF has since appointed former Deputy General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme as interim General Secretary, while preparations for the September 27 elective congress have been suspended pending the completion of the reforms.
