The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Atiku Abubakar, has promised to reopen Nigeria’s land borders and revive cross-border trade if elected president in 2027.
Atiku made the pledge while addressing supporters in a video shared online on Friday.
The former vice president said border closures and restrictions had disrupted legitimate trans-border businesses, leaving many young Nigerians unemployed and bankrupt.
He noted that several northern states share borders with Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and the Benin Republic, where cross-border trade has long provided livelihoods for residents.
According to Atiku, the loss of businesses and jobs has also contributed to insecurity in the region.
“I am going to reopen all the borders,” he said.
Nigeria shares land borders with Niger, Chad, Cameroon, and Benin Republic, while the Federal Government has recently pursued efforts to strengthen both border security and cross-border trade.
