A joint security force comprising police officers, military personnel, and forest guards has launched a large-scale rescue operation in Kwara State following an attack on a church in the early hours of Sunday by suspected bandits.
The incident occurred at the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) located in the Omugo community within Ifelodun Local Government Area.
According to a statement by the Kwara State Police Command, the armed assailants stormed the church on March 22, 2026, during the morning worship service at about 10:00 a.m.
The Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, who visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment, confirmed the severity of the attack. Information gathered from the officiating pastor, Rev. Omole, revealed that eight worshippers were abducted and taken into a nearby forest.
Following a distress call, a combined team of security operatives was immediately deployed to the area. The police confirmed that three of the victims have since been rescued unharmed, while five others remain in captivity.
To intensify the rescue efforts, the Commissioner of Police has deployed operatives from the Police Special Intervention Squad (SIS) to the Omugo axis. Their mandate includes reinforcing the ongoing operation, ensuring the safe return of the remaining victims, and strengthening efforts to apprehend the perpetrators.
CP Adekimi strongly condemned the attack, describing it as brutal, unacceptable, and a direct assault on the peace, safety, and sanctity of a place of worship.
He expressed deep concern over the distress caused by the incident and extended his sympathies to the affected families and the entire Omugo community.
The Police Command reassured the public that all necessary operational and intelligence-driven measures are being employed to track down the kidnappers and secure the release of those still in captivity.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, residents of the affected area were urged to remain calm but vigilant.
The police also called on members of the public to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could aid the ongoing operation.
