Kebbi State Deputy Governor Umar Abubakar-Tafida, has rejected claims that a Supreme Court judgment on the 2023 governorship election was responsible for his replacement as Governor Nasir Idris’ running mate for the 2027 election.
The All Progressives Congress, APC, had announced former Commissioner for Finance, Ibrahim Muhammad Augie, as Idris’ new running mate, citing professional legal advice over issues linked to the 2023 election litigation.
APC National Organising Secretary, Suleiman Argungu, said Tafida was consulted and accepted the decision.
However, an aide to the deputy governor initially disputed the claim, saying Tafida was not consulted before Augie’s emergence.
Speaking later in Argungu, Tafida accepted the political decision but dismissed attempts to link his replacement to the Supreme Court judgment, describing the explanation as an effort to damage his political reputation.
The deputy governor urged his supporters to remain calm, stressing that political positions were temporary.
The development affects the APC’s proposed 2027 governorship ticket and does not affect Tafida’s current position as deputy governor.
