The Federal Workers Forum (FWF) has asked President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly to raise the minimum wage for federal civil servants from N70,000 to N300,000.
The demand was contained in a letter dated September 2, 2026, and signed by the forum’s National Coordinator, Andrew Emelieze, and General Secretary, Ogundele Ayodele.
The letter was addressed to the Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives through the Clerk of the National Assembly. Tinubu, the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation were also listed as recipients.
The workers also proposed a new salary structure that would see Level 1 workers earn N300,000 monthly, while Level 17 officers would receive up to N1.5 million.
The FWF said the current wage structure no longer reflects the rising cost of living, citing increases in the prices of food, transportation, accommodation, electricity, cooking gas and other basic necessities.
The forum also accused the Federal Government of failing to fully implement the consequential adjustments and allowances linked to the N70,000 minimum wage introduced in 2024.
The N70,000 minimum wage replaced the previous N30,000 benchmark in 2024, while the statutory review period was reduced from five years to three.
The FWF, however, argued that workers should not have to wait until 2027 for a review, given the current economic pressures.
Beyond the wage increase, the group demanded payment of outstanding salaries, promotion arrears and allowances, including the 40 per cent peculiar allowance. It also called for a permanent cost-of-living allowance, improved health insurance, housing and car loans, better pension arrangements and measures to reduce workers’ tax burden.
The forum urged the National Assembly to treat its demands as an emergency, warning that continued financial hardship could affect workers’ productivity and welfare.
The National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission currently lists official circulars covering the implementation of the 2024 minimum wage and consequential adjustments in the Federal Public Service.
