Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi scored his first Premier League goal for Coventry City as they defeated Sunderland 3-1 at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Saturday.

Awoniyi doubled Coventry’s lead in the 37th minute after Tatsuhiro Sakamoto had opened the scoring in the 17th minute.
The 29-year-old capitalized on a defensive error before beating Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs to put the hosts in control.
Jack Rudoni extended Coventry’s advantage in the 52nd minute, while Enzo Le Fée converted a penalty in the 67th minute to give Sunderland a consolation goal.
Awoniyi, who joined Coventry from Nottingham Forest, was substituted in the 72nd minute.
The victory lifted Frank Lampard’s side out of the Premier League relegation zone, while Sunderland remained at the bottom of the table.
The result also ended Coventry’s run of consecutive league defeats.
