Court Grants El-Rufai N100m Bail, Orders Strict Compliance with Conditions

The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, in the sum of N100 million over allegations of national security breach.

Delivering ruling on the bail application on Monday, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik outlined a series of stringent conditions the defendant must meet before regaining his freedom.

The court directed that El-Rufai provide one surety in like sum. The surety must be a resident of either Maitama or Asokoro districts of Abuja and is required to deposit the original Certificate of Occupancy of a landed property with the court registry.

Additionally, the surety must be a federal civil servant not below Grade Level 17 and present proof of salary payments for at least three months, duly authenticated by a bank manager within the court’s jurisdiction. The surety is also to depose to an affidavit of means, execute a bail bond, and submit a recent passport photograph.

As part of the bail terms, El-Rufai is to surrender all valid international passports to the court. The surety must also provide a verification letter from their department, alongside a tax clearance certificate covering the last six months.

Justice Abdulmalik further ordered the former governor to report to the headquarters of the Department of State Services (DSS) every last Friday of the month by 10 a.m. to sign an attendance register pending the conclusion of the trial.

The court warned that any breach of the conditions would result in an automatic revocation of the bail.

In addition, El-Rufai is to submit a letter of attestation from the Chairman of the Kaduna Traditional Council.

The judge also directed an accelerated hearing of the charges filed against him by the Federal Government.
