The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has asked former Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Sylva to make himself available for questioning over an alleged $14.86 million fraud case.
EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, made this known on Monday while responding to allegations by Sylva that the commission had become more of an organ of the All Progressives Congress than a state institution.
“He has been declared wanted; he should make himself available to the commission,” Oyewale said.
The development came shortly after Sylva announced his resignation from the APC, accusing the ruling party of abandoning the principles on which it was founded and criticizing the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
In his resignation letter dated August 31, Sylva said he had copied the EFCC because of what he described as the commission’s increasingly political conduct.
He alleged that the EFCC had “conducted itself more as an organ of the APC than as an institution of State” and said he was prepared to face what he described as a possible “witch-hunt” against him and his associates.
The former governor said he could no longer remain in a party whose leaders, in his view, had abandoned basic principles of decency and morality.
He also said the APC-led government had disappointed Nigerians and expressed confidence that voters would change the country’s political direction at the next general election.
The EFCC declared Sylva wanted in November 2025 over an alleged case of conspiracy and dishonest conversion involving $14,859,257.
Sylva is also named as a defendant in a separate 13-count charge filed by the Federal Government over an alleged plot against the Tinubu administration. The charges include alleged treason, terrorism-related offences and money laundering. He is listed as being at large.
Sylva has denied involvement in the alleged plot, while the allegations remain before the courts.
He served as Bayelsa State governor from 2007 to 2012 and later became Minister of State for Petroleum Resources under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
