The father of 22-year-old University of Port Harcourt graduate Anthony Obodo has alleged that police officers involved in his son’s fatal shooting were paid to kill him.
Princewill Obodo made the allegation as protests continued in Port Harcourt over his son’s death.
Anthony was reportedly shot by a police officer at the Agip-Ada George Junction on Thursday, August 27. Eyewitnesses said he was driving when police officers attempted to stop him, and one of them allegedly opened fire.
The victim reportedly lost control of his vehicle after being shot, crashing into passers-by and leaving others injured.
His father alleged that the officers had been deployed for security duties at the Nigerian Bar Association conference before being moved to the area where Anthony was killed. He also claimed that police authorities who visited the family confirmed that his son was innocent.
Youths on Monday protested at the Agip-Ada George axis, blocking parts of the road and disrupting traffic.
Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, later addressed the protesters, condemning the incident and assuring them that justice would be served.
The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed that the officer allegedly involved and members of his team have been detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department pending an investigation. Police said preliminary findings indicated that an altercation and scuffle occurred before the gun was discharged.
