NLC, TUC Raise Alarm, Threaten Mass Strike Over Security Failures

The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria have cautioned that they may initiate a nationwide industrial action if the deteriorating security situation across the country persists.

Leaders of the two labour centres issued the warning during a joint press briefing held on the sidelines of the 114th session of the International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.

They expressed concern over the rising incidents of terrorism, banditry and abductions, noting that continued attacks on citizens could compel organised labour to shut down economic activities nationwide.

The unions stressed that failure by authorities to decisively address the security challenges would leave them with no alternative but to mobilise workers for a comprehensive strike.

They also rejected statements by some state governors suggesting that negotiations were ongoing regarding a proposed N100,000 minimum wage, describing such claims as inaccurate and inconsistent with the realities of current discussions on workers’ welfare.

The warning comes amid a resurgence of insecurity in various parts of the country, including the recent abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, which has heightened public concern.
