Nigeria Has No Active Ebola Cases After Patient’s Evacuation — WHO

Nigeria currently has no active Ebola cases following the medical evacuation of the country’s only confirmed patient and her husband to Switzerland, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has said.

WHO Regional Director for Africa, Prof. Mohamed Janabi, disclosed this on Monday, October 26, following the evacuation of the Swiss couple from Abuja.

Janabi said the patient was clinically stable after Nigerian medical personnel treated her through the acute phase of the illness. He commended the Federal Government, health workers and emergency responders for managing the case.

However, he stressed that surveillance must continue, with Nigerian authorities monitoring 52 contacts linked to the patient. Swiss authorities will take responsibility for the patient’s continued treatment and the monitoring of her husband, who has shown no symptoms.

The evacuation follows Nigeria’s confirmation of its first imported case of Ebola in the current outbreak on October 20. Health authorities have maintained containment measures and urged the public to remain vigilant. The evacuation does not mean the outbreak has been officially declared over.
