Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has revealed that genotype compatibility was an important factor in his decision to marry fellow singer Simi.
Speaking on the One54 Africa podcast, the singer, who lives with sickle cell disease, said he checked Simi’s genotype early in their relationship before deciding to proceed with the marriage.
According to Adekunle, Simi is AA, while he is AS. He said he would not have gone ahead with the relationship if her genotype had posed a higher risk of having children with sickle cell disease.
“I wouldn’t have married my wife Simi if she were SS or AS. She’s AA,” he said.
Adekunle Gold has been an advocate for sickle cell awareness and runs a foundation supporting people affected by the condition.
He and Simi got married in January 2019 and have two children.
