Coastal Highway Now Named After Tinubu; FG Unveils New Road Upgrades

The Federal Government of Nigeria has renamed the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway in honor of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing his long-standing vision for the project.

Minister of Works David Umahi announced the decision on Thursday in Abuja, stating that the road will now be known as the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway. He said the move followed consultations within the ministry and reflects Tinubu’s role in conceptualizing the project nearly three decades ago as governor of Lagos State.

Umahi also revealed that the president has approved a 400-kilometer extension of the Fourth Legacy Highway, increasing its total length from 700km to 1,100km and extending it into Taraba State. The highway connects key northern cities, including Jos, Bauchi, Gombe, and Maiduguri.

In addition, the government approved the dualization of 400 kilometers of the East-West Road, the reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway using reinforced concrete, and the completion of major bridge projects, including the Ibi Bridge and the 5.76km Lao Bridge in Taraba State.

The minister described the coastal highway’s first phase, from Victoria Island to Lekki, as a major milestone. The 47.47km stretch is a six-lane road with provision for a future railway line.

According to Umahi, the projects are part of broader efforts to boost connectivity, drive economic growth, and modernize Nigeria’s transport infrastructure.
