The Ogun State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service has arrested a woman, Iyabo Sowunmi, for allegedly attempting to smuggle suspected drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ibara, Abeokuta, for her son, who is on death row.
The command’s spokesperson, Olayinka Odukoya, said Sowunmi was arrested during a routine screening at the facility’s entrance on Friday, August 28.
A substance suspected to be “Colos”, a psychoactive synthetic drug, was allegedly found concealed in a sachet of beverage powder intended for her son, Dare Sowunmi.
She was subsequently handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Controller of Corrections in Ogun, Abioye Adesina, praised the officers for intercepting the suspected contraband and reiterated the command’s zero-tolerance stance on drug trafficking and other activities that could compromise security at custodial facilities.
