Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football after Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.
The 39-year-old revealed his decision in an emotional Instagram post, saying he had given everything to the Argentina national team during his 20-year international career.
“It was a decision that hurt and still hurts deep inside, but I understand that this is the right moment,” Messi said.
The Argentine captain led his country to World Cup glory in 2022, defeating France on penalties in the final in Qatar. Argentina, however, failed to retain the title after losing 1-0 to Spain in the 2026 final.
Messi said he was proud of his journey with the national team and believes it is now time for younger players to take over.
“I gave everything I had, and I don’t have anything more to give. Also, there are great young players coming through who deserve to be here,” he added.
The Inter Miami forward will continue his club career, with his current contract running until the end of the 2028 MLS season.
