US media reports arrest of alleged Fulani militia leader in Plateau

Mahmoud Adam, a suspected militia leader allegedly linked to deadly attacks in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, has reportedly been arrested in Plateau State.

The Daily Caller, a US-based news platform, reported that Adam was arrested in the early hours of September 12 at his compound in Plateau State.

According to the report, a former US intelligence officer specializing in Islamist terrorism identified Adam as the alleged secret leader of the Fulani Ethnic Militia (FEM) in Plateau and surrounding Middle Belt states.

Nigerian journalist Masara Kim also reportedly linked Adam to deadly attacks in Plateau, citing evidence gathered from detained suspects.

The Daily Caller further reported that a whistleblower provided photographs showing Adam meeting senior Nigerian military officials and receiving motorcycles from a major general in 2023. It also alleged that Senator Shehu Buba had previously intervened following an earlier arrest of Adam in 2024.

The senator has faced separate allegations of links to criminal networks but has denied wrongdoing, while the Nigerian military and other officials named in the report did not respond to the Daily Caller’s requests for comment.

The reported arrest has also been covered by Nigerian outlets, although an independent official confirmation of Adam’s arrest was not located in the sources reviewed.
