Yari Urges Northerners to Back Tinubu Until 2031

Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, Senator Abdul’Aziz Abubakar Yari, has urged Northerners to allow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to complete eight years in office before seeking a return of the presidency to the region.

Yari made the call on Saturday after a closed-door meeting with Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the Kano Government House.

The former Zamfara governor said the North should respect the political understanding of rotating the presidency between the North and South, noting that former President Muhammadu Buhari, a Northerner, governed from 2015 to 2023 before power shifted to Tinubu in 2023.

He argued that the North should not seek to overturn the arrangement because of its population, saying the presidency could return to the region after Tinubu’s tenure in 2031.

“I am calling on northerners to note that by the time Bola Ahmed Tinubu finishes in 2031, it will definitely come back to the North. This is how the arrangement is,” Yari said.

Yari acknowledged that Tinubu’s administration was not perfect but said the country’s security and economic challenges could not be attributed entirely to the current government.

He also urged Nigerians to assess the administration’s performance using economic indicators, including inflation and foreign reserves, comparing the figures in 2023 with the current situation.

Yari said his role as campaign council director-general was not only to promote Tinubu but also to encourage national unity and understanding among Nigerians.

His comments come amid growing political activity ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with other northern political leaders also making calls for the continuation of the North-South rotation arrangement.
