Tinubu Steps In to Restore Peace in Rivers, Stops Fubara’s Impeachment

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has intervened to calm the growing political crisis in Rivers State, ordering the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to stop all moves to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

According to reports by Arise News, the president’s action is part of a new effort to restore peace amid rising tensions between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Wike.

Sources said President Tinubu stressed the need for political stability in Rivers State, especially because of its economic importance and the political activities expected in the coming months.

As part of the reported agreement, Tinubu directed Wike and lawmakers loyal to him in the Rivers State House of Assembly to immediately suspend the impeachment process. The impeachment move, which began in early January 2026, was based on allegations of gross misconduct against Governor Fubara.

The president also reportedly instructed Governor Fubara to recognise Wike as the dominant political figure in Rivers State, regardless of party differences. While Wike remains a key figure in the PDP, Fubara has recently aligned more closely with the APC under Tinubu’s administration.

This is not the first time President Tinubu has stepped in to resolve the dispute. Earlier efforts included a peace agreement reached at the Presidential Villa in 2023, which later collapsed. In March 2025, Tinubu declared a six-month state of emergency in Rivers State, temporarily suspending Governor Fubara and other top officials, followed by further reconciliation attempts.

In January 2026, the impeachment process was revived after Wike accused Fubara of breaking earlier agreements. This led to court action, with a Rivers State High Court issuing an interim order stopping the House of Assembly from continuing the impeachment.

Recent reports indicate that the impeachment effort has now stalled, with no active proceedings as of early February 2026.
