The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed it disbursed N1.28 billion for solar streetlight projects, despite the projects falling outside its core mandate.
In a statement issued on Saturday, TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah said the payments, made in May and June 2026, were tied to constituency projects approved in the 2026 Appropriation Act.
The company clarified that it neither initiated nor requested the projects, noting they were inserted into its capital budget by the National Assembly, with TCN designated as the implementing agency.
TCN stressed that the funds were federal government appropriations and not sourced from its internally generated revenue.
While acknowledging that its primary responsibility is bulk electricity transmission, the company said it is sometimes assigned to execute government-backed projects, including constituency interventions.
The clarification follows public scrutiny over the spending, amid broader concerns about the role of government agencies in executing projects outside their statutory functions.
