Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has urged residents to turn out in large numbers for the August 15 governorship election, assuring voters of their safety despite rising political tensions.
Speaking during a church service in Osogbo on Sunday, the governor called on the electorate to ignore threats and intimidation, insisting that voters should freely exercise their democratic rights.
In a statement by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke accused opposition elements of fueling recent violence in the state, claiming the actions stem from fear of electoral defeat.
The appeal comes amid growing concerns over pre-election violence. Civil society groups have warned of increasing politically motivated attacks and heightened anxiety among residents ahead of the poll.
Security agencies have also stepped in, with the Inspector-General of Police cautioning political actors against inciting violence and pledging a peaceful and credible election process.
Adeleke expressed confidence in his chances, citing his administration’s record in sectors such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and workers’ welfare.
He urged voters to reject violence at the ballot, saying the election would be a test of the people’s resolve to uphold democracy.
