Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has announced that the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the final World Cup of his career.
The 41-year-old made the statement on Sunday ahead of Portugal’s Round of 16 clash against Spain, saying he is focused on enjoying the tournament. “It’s about enjoying it as much as possible,” Ronaldo said, adding, “This will be my last World Cup.”
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner noted that he would retire from international football without regrets, stressing that he has given everything to the game. He also said his continued presence on the pitch is driven by passion rather than the need to prove himself.
Ronaldo has delivered a strong performance at the tournament, scoring three goals and becoming the first player to score in six different FIFA World Cups. He described the 2026 edition as the most emotionally rewarding of his career.
Despite never winning the World Cup, Ronaldo said his legacy is secure regardless of the outcome, adding that only one team can lift the trophy.
The Portuguese forward, who plays for Saudi club Al-Nassr, also expressed appreciation for the criticism he has faced throughout his career, saying it has contributed to his growth.
Portugal will face Spain in the Round of 16 as Ronaldo continues what is expected to be his final World Cup campaign.
