Rocket Launchers Recovered as Concerns Grow Over Bandit Firepower

Fresh concerns have emerged over the firepower available to armed groups in Nigeria after police recovered two rocket launchers following a bandit attack on Tsabre Village in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The Sokoto State Police Command said the attackers invaded the community around 1 a.m. on October 2, 2026, prompting tactical teams to respond to a distress call. The officers engaged the assailants in a gun battle, forcing them to retreat into a nearby forest.

The discovery has renewed questions about how armed groups obtain sophisticated weapons, with security concerns linked to arms smuggling, porous borders, and alleged diversion of weapons and ammunition.

Another concern is the financial strength of kidnapping networks. A report by SBM Intelligence revealed that 7,825 people were abducted across Nigeria between July 2025 and June 2026, while at least N7.78 billion was paid in ransom

Security experts have repeatedly raised concerns that ransom payments and illicit arms trafficking could sustain criminal groups and strengthen their capacity to carry out attacks.

Retired Superintendent of Police Desmond Omale, in comments cited in the original report, called for authorities to investigate the alleged sponsors and financiers of banditry, arguing that efforts should extend beyond operations in forests to those benefiting from the violence.

The recovery of the rocket launchers has added to calls for stronger action against arms suppliers, criminal financiers, and the networks sustaining insecurity.
