Reps Threaten Arrest of Ede Poly Rector, Bursar Over Audit Queries

The House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee has threatened to order the arrest of the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State, Sani Man Yahaya, and the institution’s Bursar, Aishat Shade Adebayo, over unresolved audit queries and alleged financial irregularities.

The committee directed the officials to appear before it on Monday, October 19, 2026, to explain discrepancies in the institution’s spending, procurement records and other financial transactions.

The committee’s chairman, Bamidele Salam, announced the decision on Friday following a review of audit responses from six tertiary institutions.

According to the committee, the officials repeatedly failed to honour its invitations, prompting the threat of arrest to compel their attendance.

The outstanding issues include three queries in the institution’s 2021 audit report concerning an unretired cash advance, the engagement of an external solicitor without the required approval and foreign trips allegedly undertaken without proper authorisation.

The lawmakers also questioned the late submission of the institution’s audited accounts for 2022, 2023 and 2024.

A major concern was the reported difference between the polytechnic’s approved overhead budget of ₦110.2 million for 2023 and its actual expenditure of ₦882.5 million, representing an excess of about ₦772 million.

The committee further raised concerns over the alleged failure to provide evidence of statutory remittances to the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, missing procurement documents for capital and Tertiary Education Trust Fund projects, and ₦20.5 million reportedly yet to be credited to some employees’ retirement savings accounts.

Following an inspection of an ongoing lecture theatre project, the lawmakers also questioned the quality of the construction and requested the project’s procurement records, bill of quantities and contractor details. The committee said the requested documents had not been provided.

Salam said the affected officials must appear with the relevant records to address the outstanding queries, warning that the House would invoke its powers to compel their attendance if they failed to comply.

The committee said the investigation was part of efforts to strengthen transparency, accountability and compliance with financial regulations in public institutions.
