Eight Jailed for Thuggery in Bauchi

Eight men have been sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment each for thuggery and disturbance of public peace in Unguwar Dim, Bauchi metropolis, with the court giving each convict the option of paying a N370,000 fine.

The suspects were arrested after the Bauchi State Police Command received a complaint from the Unguwar Dim Peace and Security Committee on October 14 over renewed thuggery in the area.

Police operatives and committee members subsequently raided a suspected criminal hideout in the early hours of October 15, arresting nine suspects and recovering machetes, cutlasses, knives, sticks, illicit substances and other dangerous items.

Police spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, said in a statement on Saturday that eight suspects were charged to court after investigations. He said they pleaded guilty and were convicted and sentenced.

The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, welcomed the judgment, describing it as a result of effective collaboration between the police and the community.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling thuggery and other violent crimes across Bauchi State.
