Remi Tinubu Responds to Backlash, Broadens Scope of Trader Support

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has clarified that the Federal Government’s economic empowerment program targets a broad range of small-scale traders, not just akara sellers.

Speaking on Monday at the inauguration of the Abubakar Maje Haruna Hall at the Emir of Hadejia’s Palace in Jigawa State, Remi Tinubu addressed backlash following earlier remarks that highlighted businesses such as akara, roasted corn, and kuli-kuli.

She explained that the initiative also supports traders dealing in tomatoes, peppers, vegetables, and roasted plantain, among others.

Remi Tinubu announced that ₦100 million has been released to the Jigawa State Government to support 2,000 petty traders, with each beneficiary set to receive ₦50,000 to boost their businesses.

“We have identified 2,000 women already engaged in small businesses. Each of them will receive ₦50,000 to strengthen their businesses,” she said.

The First Lady added that criticism would not deter the government from continuing its economic support programs, stressing that beneficiaries value the intervention.
