A fresh batch of 269 Nigerians evacuated from South Africa arrived in Lagos on Tuesday as the Federal Government continued efforts to bring home citizens affected by anti-immigration protests and rising xenophobic tensions.
The evacuees arrived aboard an Air Peace flight, which landed at the cargo terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, at about 10:54 a.m.
Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa said the latest group was received by senior ministry officials led by the Director of the African Affairs Department, Ambassador Haruna Ali-Gombe.
Ebienfa said the returnees were welcomed on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, who reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting Nigerians abroad.
He noted that the latest arrivals came after 66 Nigerians returned on June 24 aboard a South African Airways flight, while 258 others arrived on June 11.
The government said a total of 593 Nigerians had been evacuated from South Africa as of June 30, with more flights expected in the coming days to bring home others who have volunteered to return.
Ebienfa added that the Federal Government would continue engaging South African authorities to ensure the safety and protection of Nigerians living in the country.
