The Nigeria Police Force has disbursed ₦2.317 billion in insurance and welfare benefits to 2,971 beneficiaries and next-of-kin of deceased police officers.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, presented the cheques to the beneficiaries at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.
The payment covers insurance policy years 2017/2018, 2018/2019, 2020/2021, 2021/2022, 2022/2023, and 2024/2025, under the Group Life Assurance, Group Personal Accident, and IGP Family Welfare schemes.
Disu said the ₦2,317,177,094 payment included outstanding balances recovered from insurance companies after earlier partial settlements.
He described the payments as legitimate entitlements owed to families of officers who died in service, saying the Force would not abandon those who lost their lives protecting Nigerians.
The IGP acknowledged the risks faced by police personnel, citing officers killed in Buni-Yadi, Yobe State, a rescue operation in Zamfara State and an ambush in Kebbi State that claimed the lives of 10 personnel.
He urged the beneficiaries to use the funds wisely, particularly for the education and welfare of children and other dependents left behind.
Disu also said personnel welfare remained a priority of his administration, promising continued efforts to improve officers’ working conditions and access to legitimate benefits.
