Four police officers have been detained by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command over allegations of extorting ₦53,000 from the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Aliyu, in Abuja.
FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, disclosed the development on Monday while briefing journalists. He said the officers are in custody and undergoing disciplinary procedures.
According to Sanusi, preliminary findings show the officers left their assigned duty posts and set up an illegal checkpoint around the Banex area in Wuse. There, they allegedly stopped motorists and extorted money.
The ICPC chairman was reportedly stopped during the operation and forced to withdraw ₦53,000 via a Point of Sale (POS) terminal, including transaction charges, before the officers shared the money among themselves.
Sanusi described the act as criminal and a violation of police standards, adding that those found guilty could face dismissal.
He said the officers were declared wanted after the incident, and their arrest followed the apprehension of the suspected group leader.
The commissioner also reiterated that police officers are prohibited from conducting random searches of citizens’ mobile phones. He urged residents to report cases of extortion and harassment through official complaint channels.
