Ogun Monarch Warns Youths Against Vote-Buying Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Towulade of Owu Akinale in Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State, Oba Oluseyi Adediran, has urged youths to reject vote-buying and resist attempts by politicians to use them for electoral campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Adediran gave the warning during a press briefing to mark the 2026 Odun Olowu Festival, urging young Nigerians to assess candidates based on their character, competence and track records rather than financial inducements.

He warned that selling votes for temporary financial gains could mortgage the future of young people and undermine national development.

“Temporary money is nothing. They should not allow themselves to be used for temporary money,” the monarch said.

He also urged parents, teachers and community leaders to instil good values in young people, while encouraging eligible voters to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and participate in the elections.

The Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Saka Matemilola, who also spoke at the briefing, called for improved education, healthcare, enterprise development and job creation to address Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges.

He said the Owu Heritage Initiative had supported educational programmes, medical outreaches, vocational training, women’s empowerment and clean-water projects across communities.

Matemilola urged members of the kingdom to preserve their cultural heritage while promoting unity and community development.

The 2026 Odun Olowu Festival features cultural activities, interfaith prayers, sporting events, a symposium and community development projects.
