The Federal Government has approved a sweeping reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), marking the most comprehensive overhaul of the scheme since its establishment in 1973.
The decision was taken at a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja on Monday, with officials saying the changes aim to reposition the programme as a skills-driven and productivity-focused platform aligned with Nigeria’s economic priorities.
A key highlight of the reform is a shift in leadership structure, with the NYSC to be headed by a civilian, while the military will continue to provide security for corps members nationwide.
The council also directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Ministry of Youth Development to amend the NYSC Act to enable the implementation of the new framework.
According to the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, the reforms are designed to transform the scheme into a platform that equips young Nigerians with practical skills for employment and entrepreneurship.
Key changes include a technology-driven mobilisation process, improved security through risk-based deployment, and a redesigned orientation programme with stronger emphasis on leadership, digital skills and entrepreneurship.
The reforms will also introduce skills-based primary assignments, upgraded orientation camp standards, a new graduation ceremony to replace the traditional passing-out parade, and a redesigned NYSC uniform.
Established after the Nigerian Civil War to promote national unity, the NYSC has deployed graduates across the country for over five decades. Officials say the latest reforms are intended to make the scheme more relevant to current economic and development needs.
