Nigerians Urged to Claim Forgotten Dividends as SEC Starts Campaign

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has launched a nationwide campaign to help Nigerians recover unclaimed dividends and other funds from capital market transactions.

The initiative began with a town hall meeting in Lagos and aims to raise awareness about unclaimed monies, the role of the National Investor Protection Fund (NIPF), and how investors can verify and reclaim their funds.

Representing SEC Director-General Emomotimi Agama at the event, Hafsat Rufai, Director of Registration and Exchanges, said the campaign is focused on ensuring that investors receive funds rightfully belonging to them.

According to the SEC, unclaimed funds include returns from public offers, payments from mergers and acquisitions, and other investor-related monies that have not been collected.

The Commission described the situation as unacceptable, noting that many investors and their families are either unaware of these funds or unsure of how to recover them.

The Lagos event marks the start of a broader outreach that will extend across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory.
