Team Nigeria’s Ruth Nyong secured a silver medal in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Nyong lifted a total of 168kg to finish second on the podium. India’s Mirabai Chanu Saikhom claimed gold with a record-breaking 190kg total, while Malaysia’s Irene Jane Henry took bronze with 167kg.
In the rest of the standings, Jo-Beth Deireragea placed fourth with 161kg, followed by Tammy Wong in fifth (160kg). Nikole Roberts finished sixth (154kg), Alex Mackay seventh (142kg), and Janet Atieno Oduor eighth (133kg).
With the result, Team Nigeria’s medal tally at the Games rises to seven, comprising three gold and four silver medals. The team will aim to add more medals as events continue.
