The death toll from devastating floods and landslides along the Nepal-China border has risen above 1,000, with thousands of people still missing.
Nepal’s disaster authority said on Tuesday that 987 people had been confirmed dead, while 3,916 others remained missing, including 583 foreign nationals.
Chinese authorities have reported 16 deaths and 546 people missing in Tibet, bringing the combined death toll to 1,003 and the number of missing people to 4,462.
The disaster, which struck on August 26, was triggered by a major glacial collapse and unleashed destructive floods and debris across communities near the border. Rescue teams are continuing search operations in difficult conditions, with hundreds of workers at hydropower facilities also reported missing.
Among the missing are hundreds of foreign nationals, including citizens of India, the United States, Ukraine, Malaysia, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Authorities in India have also recovered 17 bodies from rivers flowing from Nepal, though they have not been included in the official death toll.
