The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deputy governorship candidate for Ogun State in the 2027 elections, Lateefah Sowunmi-Kolapo, has called on Muslim women to unite across political, professional and organisational lines to address rising social vices and strengthen family values.
Speaking at the inaugural summit of the Egba Muslim Women Forum in Abeokuta on Sunday, Sowunmi-Kolapo said mothers play a critical role in shaping society and must intentionally instill strong moral values in their children.
She warned that issues such as drug abuse, cybercrime, cultism, and declining moral standards continue to threaten communities, stressing that women must take active responsibility in reversing the trend.
“Motherhood goes beyond childbirth; it involves nurturing discipline, integrity, and compassion,” she said.
Sowunmi-Kolapo described the newly formed forum as a unifying platform aimed at empowering women, strengthening families, and promoting community development across Egbaland. She urged members to prioritize collaboration over rivalry and actively contribute to leadership, mentorship, and humanitarian initiatives.
Also speaking, Ogun State Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, described the event as a significant milestone and encouraged women to embrace unity despite differences in affiliation.
She noted that collective action among women would drive more meaningful and lasting impact in society.
The summit brought together Islamic scholars, traditional leaders, and representatives of Muslim organizations, focusing on the role of women in building stronger families and communities.
