Multiple people have died following a collision involving a police vehicle and a Volkswagen Passat on the A66 near Middlesbrough, northern England.
The crash occurred at about 3:39am on Saturday in South Bank, Teesside, Cleveland Police said. The North East Ambulance Service said three vehicles were involved and deployed 14 ambulance units, including specialist medical teams.
Several people were pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts by emergency responders. Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact number of fatalities or released the identities of those killed.
Cleveland Police said officers were working to identify the victims and inform their families while urging the public not to speculate about the circumstances of the crash.
The A66 remains closed in both directions between Normanby Road and Church Lane as emergency crews and investigators continue working at the scene. Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is also expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the police involvement, with further details yet to emerge as investigations continue.
