Former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye has warned the Federal Government against inviting, arresting, or interrogating African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar over a corruption petition before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Melaye, in a video shared on X on Friday, said the ADC would mobilize Nigerians if Atiku was targeted over what he described as a “frivolous petition.”
He said the opposition would prove that Nigerians were more numerous than those in government if the former vice-president were arrested.
His comments followed a petition by former House of Representatives member Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma, asking the EFCC to reopen allegations of financial crimes against Atiku dating back to 2005 and 2006, when he was vice-president.
The petition, filed through lawyer Hannibal Uwaifo, was received by the EFCC on September 1. Agbonayinma gave the commission 14 days to act or face possible legal action.
Atiku has denied wrongdoing and said those with evidence against him should present it to the relevant authorities.
There was no confirmed report as of Friday that the EFCC had invited or arrested Atiku over the renewed petition.
