US President Donald Trump has linked the ongoing war with Iran to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, saying the US must continue fighting to prevent threats against the country.
Trump made the remarks on Friday during a ceremony at the Pentagon marking the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, which killed 2,977 people.
“We will never, ever forget. That’s why we fight today,” Trump said, adding that the US had “no choice” but to seek victory.
He also praised US troops involved in the “War on Terror” and vowed that Iran would never obtain a nuclear weapon, describing the country as the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth similarly defended the US campaign against Iran, saying American forces had been fighting the country’s Islamic government for months.
Trump chose to attend the Pentagon ceremony instead of the main commemoration in New York, where Vice President JD Vance joined former presidents and other dignitaries.
The Pentagon attack was one of four coordinated 9/11 attacks, with 184 people killed when a hijacked American Airlines plane crashed into the building.
