Academic and non-academic workers in Lagos State-owned universities have commenced an indefinite strike over the non-implementation of agreements reached with the state government and nine months of unpaid arrears.

The workers, under the Joint Action Committee (JAC) comprising ASUU, SSANU, NASU, and NAAT, announced the strike after the expiration of a final seven-day ultimatum to the Lagos State Government.
The action affects Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), and Lagos State University of Education (LASUED).
JAC Chairman Prof. Ibrahim Bakare said the unions had exhausted negotiations with the government over the implementation of the 2026 Federal Government/staff unions’ agreements.
According to him, a resolution signed on August 31 provided for revised allowances, non-taxable benefits, and payment of outstanding arrears. However, September salaries were paid without the agreed adjustments or arrears.
The unions said the unpaid arrears have now accumulated to nine months, covering January to September 2026. They are demanding full implementation of the agreements, payment of the arrears, non-taxation of applicable allowances, and a 15 percent “Lagos Factor” allowance.
They are also demanding the fulfillment of previous commitments, including a 20 percent salary increase and the provision of five Marcopolo buses for staff and students.
The strike followed an earlier 14-day ultimatum issued in September and a final seven-day ultimatum that expired on October 2.
Meanwhile, Lagos State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, had said the government was working to resolve the dispute and was awaiting Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s approval for the release of funds.
The unions said the strike would continue until their demands are addressed.
