Kwara ADC, Ex-Spokesman Clash Over Resignation

The Kwara State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and its former Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Basambo, have disagreed over his resignation, with the party alleging that he quit to avoid disciplinary action, while he accused its leadership of poor management and lack of internal democracy.

Basambo announced his resignation in a letter dated October 23, 2026, accusing some party leaders of hypocrisy, dishonesty and double standards. He also criticised the party’s governorship candidate, Zakari Mohammed, alleging that his conduct contributed to his decision to leave.

However, the state party secretary, Ibrahim Alege, said on Sunday that Basambo’s departure followed concerns about his conduct and commitment to the party’s ideals. He said the leadership and Council of Elders had initiated disciplinary proceedings before the former spokesman resigned.

Alege said the resignation was a personal decision and insisted that the party remained committed to discipline, accountability and providing credible leadership in Kwara State.

Responding, Basambo denied resigning to evade disciplinary action, saying he had not received any formal allegations or been given an opportunity to defend himself. He also questioned the proposed disciplinary panel, alleging that some of its members were among those whose conduct he had challenged.

The former spokesman further accused the party’s leadership of failing to build an effective political structure, alleging that the state executive had been sidelined and that some influential members had taken control of its affairs. He also raised concerns over the party’s publicity, secretariat and the alleged replacement of a House of Assembly primary winner in Oyun Local Government Area.

Basambo defended his meeting with the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate, Bolakale Kawu, insisting that it was not an act of disloyalty to the ADC.

Despite his criticism of the party, he expressed appreciation for his political leader, Abubakar Kannike, and confirmed that his resignation took immediate effect.
