Katsina Tops Nigeria’s 2026 Climate Governance Ranking

Katsina State has emerged as Nigeria’s top-performing state in the 2026 Subnational Climate Governance Performance Rating and Ranking (SCGPRR 3.0), ahead of Kano and Abia.

The ranking, conducted by the Society for Planet and Prosperity (SPP) in collaboration with the Department of Climate Change under the Federal Ministry of Environment, assesses climate policies, funding, institutional structures, and the implementation of environmental projects across the country’s 36 states.

The results were presented in Abuja on Thursday, October 8, 2026.

Katsina’s performance was attributed to its climate initiatives, including the Katsina Green Growth Agenda and the state’s Climate Change Policy and Plan of Action for 2025–2030.

Other interventions include afforestation, land restoration, climate-smart agriculture, renewable energy, and water conservation, aimed at tackling desertification, drought, flooding, and land degradation.

Reacting to the recognition, the state’s Acting Commissioner for Environment and Special Adviser on Climate Change, Professor Mohammed A. Al-Amin, said the achievement demonstrated how effective planning and strong institutions could turn environmental challenges into opportunities for sustainable development.

He pledged to strengthen climate monitoring, attract more climate financing, encourage private-sector investment, and improve transparency to sustain the state’s progress.

The ranking is designed to help states measure their climate governance performance, identify gaps, and improve the implementation of climate policies. Kano and Abia secured second and third positions, respectively.
