Enugu Attack: Obi Warns Political Leaders Against Violence

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has condemned the attack on party supporters in Enugu State, warning that anarchy would affect everyone if left unchecked.

Obi spoke in a video shared on X following Saturday’s violence, which occurred as supporters gathered at Akanu Ibiam International Airport to welcome the party’s governorship candidate, Chinyeaka Ohaa.

“The unfortunate incident that happened today in Enugu State, where NDC supporters were attacked by political thugs, has reportedly claimed one life. Those in government should know that when anarchy comes, it consumes everybody,” he said.

Obi also disclosed that some of his scheduled engagements in other states had been cancelled after those who invited him reportedly received threats.

The violence spread beyond the airport to the NDC secretariat, where supporters had gathered for the party’s governorship campaign flag-off. Videos from the scenes showed supporters fleeing amid gunshots, while vehicles and campaign materials were reportedly damaged.

The incident follows a September attack on an NDC grassroots meeting in Obuoffia Ward, Nkanu West Local Government Area, which the party had previously condemned.

Obi called on those in positions of authority to prevent political violence and warned that its consequences would not be limited to any one group.
