A 21-year-old Nigerian college basketball player, Daniel Tobiloba Adegboyega, has been arrested in the United States over an alleged rape incident.
Adegboyega, a center for Jacksonville State University’s men’s basketball team, was taken into custody and is currently being held at the Calhoun County Jail pending a bond hearing, according to court records.
Authorities allege that the incident occurred on Wednesday, with an arrest warrant stating that he engaged in sexual intercourse with the complainant “by forcible compulsion,” in violation of state law.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has also placed a hold on the player, jail records indicate.
Jacksonville State University confirmed that Adegboyega has been suspended from the team following his arrest.
The 7-foot athlete, who recently committed to the university, previously played at California Baptist after earlier stints at South Florida and Kennesaw State. He has featured in 27 college games, recording limited playing time.
The rape charge remains an allegation, and Adegboyega is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
