African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has claimed that he saved former President Olusegun Obasanjo from an alleged plan to administer a fatal injection to him while he was in prison.
Atiku made the claim while speaking with journalists, recalling events surrounding Obasanjo’s imprisonment during the military era.
According to him, he learnt of the alleged plan and warned Obasanjo against accepting the injection.
Atiku also claimed that a similar incident had occurred involving the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, whom he said he also warned after learning of the alleged plan.
“I saved Obasanjo’s life in prison by leaking information about an impending injection that could have killed him,” Atiku said.
He added that his relationship with Obasanjo later deteriorated after he opposed the former president’s alleged bid to extend his tenure beyond two terms.
“Today, he wants the world to hate me because I opposed his third-term ambition,” he said.
Atiku and Obasanjo served as president and vice president from 1999 to 2007 before their political relationship deteriorated, particularly over Obasanjo’s controversial third-term bid. The 2006 attempt to amend the Constitution to allow Obasanjo to seek another term ultimately failed.
