Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has granted clemency to 27 inmates in correctional facilities across the state as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

The latest intervention brings the number of inmates who have benefited from the governor’s clemency initiatives to more than 500, according to the state government.
The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Ahmed Maiyaki, said the exercise also included the payment of fines and compensation for some inmates as part of the administration’s restorative justice program.
He said the Kaduna Government had committed more than N300 million to fines and compensation for victims since Sani assumed office in May 2023.
Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice James Kanyip said the latest clemency was part of the governor’s practice of granting mercy on significant national occasions, including New Year, Democracy Day, and Independence Day.
Kanyip said the exercise followed established procedures and was aimed at supporting rehabilitation and reintegration while considering the interests of victims.
He urged the beneficiaries to return to their families and communities as responsible and productive citizens.
In June, Sani granted clemency to 97 inmates to mark Democracy Day, continuing his administration’s use of executive mercy as part of its justice and reintegration efforts.
