UEFA has named Somali referee Omar Artan as the match official for the 2026 UEFA Super Cup, weeks after he was denied entry into the United States ahead of the FIFA World Cup.

The European football governing body confirmed that Artan will officiate the August 12 fixture in Salzburg, Austria, featuring Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain and Europa League holders Aston Villa.
UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin commended the referee, describing him as a highly capable official who has demonstrated his competence at top-level competitions within the Confederation of African Football.
The appointment follows discussions between UEFA and the Confederation of African Football aimed at strengthening collaboration and promoting inclusivity within the sport.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe praised Artan’s selection, noting that it reflects his professionalism and has brought pride to Somalia and the wider African football community.
Artan had earlier been excluded from the World Cup after being denied entry into the United States. According to US authorities, the decision was based on security concerns related to alleged associations, rendering him ineligible for admission.
Despite the setback, Artan received a warm reception upon returning to Mogadishu and has expressed determination to participate in future global tournaments, including the 2030 World Cup.
