Former Miss Universe Nigeria 2024, Chidimma Adetshina, has appeared before the Cape Town Regional Court to challenge efforts by South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs to deport her.
Her court appearance follows a legal application questioning the legality of the deportation process. Chidimma Adetshina was arrested in June after authorities alleged she entered the country unlawfully. The case marks the latest development in an ongoing immigration dispute.
Born in Soweto to a Nigerian father and Mozambican mother, Chidimma Adetshina initially competed in the Miss South Africa 2024 pageant but withdrew amid controversy over her family’s citizenship status. South African authorities later launched an investigation, alleging possible identity irregularities linked to her mother.
The controversy triggered widespread social media backlash, with some critics targeting her Nigerian heritage despite her South African birth and eligibility for the pageant.
Chidimma Adetshina later competed in and won the Miss Universe Nigeria title, representing Nigeria at the global competition, where she finished as first runner-up and was crowned Miss Universe Africa and Oceania.
Her legal team is expected to submit an affidavit detailing steps she has taken to regularize her stay in South Africa as she seeks to halt the deportation.
