Award-winning Nollywood actress and producer Funke Akindele has opened up about the multiple jobs she took on to support herself while studying at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), including an incident where a dissatisfied customer slapped her over a nail job.
In a recent interview with BellaNaija, Funke Akindele said she taught herself nail-making by observing others in Yaba and began offering services to fellow students. “I made nails for a girl one day, and she slapped me because they were rubbish,” she recalled.
The filmmaker explained that nail-making was just one of several ventures she pursued to survive. She sold cakes, worked as a makeup artist, handled costume design, and sourced filming locations. She also revealed that she provided costumes for actresses such as Bukky Wright and Iyabo Ojo during her early years.
Funke Akindele added that she worked as a location manager, negotiating payments with property owners, and even sold bed spaces on campus to earn extra income.
Describing herself as resilient, she said her experiences shaped her determination and work ethic. “I am a hustler. Life taught me, and I cannot do otherwise,” she said.
