Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has hinted that he could take an extended break from music as he approaches 40.
Speaking on The Uncut Podcast, the singer said he does not want to remain in the spotlight at 40 while competing with younger artists in their 20s.
“Music is my blood, but I’m not going to be 40 still dragging with guys in their 20s. Jay-Z took a break, and he is doing his thing,” Davido said.
The 33-year-old said he could step away from music for as long as 10 years and still return to major commercial success because of his extensive catalogue.
“I can take a 10-year break and still do a 50-arena tour. I have the catalogue,” he said.
Davido added that he could even stop recording new music entirely without losing his influence, stressing that his existing catalogue would continue to have value.
He, however, clarified that his comments were not a call for established artists to leave the industry.
According to the singer, music should also provide artists with opportunities to explore businesses and other ventures beyond recording and performing.
“All I am saying is there are other things music should be able to help you branch out into,” he added.
