The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Port Harcourt Area I Command, has handed over a consignment of expired pharmaceutical products valued at over ₦59 million to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
The handover took place on Wednesday at the command’s headquarters in Port Harcourt, with representatives of security agencies and industry stakeholders in attendance.
Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Salamatu Atuluku, said the seizure highlights the command’s commitment to preventing harmful and prohibited drugs from entering the Nigerian market. She noted that the expired medicines were intercepted during a joint cargo examination involving Customs, NAFDAC, and other relevant agencies.
Atuluku warned that allowing such products into circulation could pose serious health risks to the public. She also commended the Comptroller-General of Customs for strengthening intelligence-led operations and inter-agency collaboration.
Receiving the items, NAFDAC’s Deputy Director of Port Inspection, Pharm. Adepoju Raufu, praised the Customs Service for the interception and assured that the agency would begin procedures for the safe disposal of the drugs in line with regulatory guidelines.
