Broos Backtracks on Exit as Bafana Bow Out to Canada

Hugo Broos has hinted he could reconsider his decision to step down as South Africa head coach following their World Cup exit to Canada.

The 74-year-old Belgian, who previously announced plans to retire after the tournament, said he would not rush into a final decision after Bafana Bafana’s 1-0 defeat in the last 32.

“It is not clever to make decisions when you are disappointed,” Broos said after the match in Los Angeles.

South Africa’s campaign ended after a late goal from Canada’s Stephen Eustaquio secured victory for the co-hosts. Broos admitted his side struggled to match Canada’s physical strength and pace.

Despite the exit, Broos has been widely praised for transforming the team, guiding them back to the World Cup for the first time in 16 years and into the knockout stage for the first time.

An insider from the South African Football Association suggested Broos could remain involved with the team, either as head coach or in a scouting role focused on players abroad.

South Africa will now turn attention to qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, where they face Kenya, Guinea and Eritrea in Group D.
